May 24, 2011, 10:40A.M.--24 hours before Kim Kardashian will announce via People magazine and Twitter that her NBA boyfriend has proposed with a whopping 20.5-carat diamond and she has said yes.
I arrive at the photo studio 20 minutes early. After a negotiation worthy of a sitting president, I've secured an hour with Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney--60 minutes to check out their new jewelry line for Sears, interview them, and be photographed with them for this story.
The clock is ticking! I present myself and am informed that the girls are on the premises but wrapping up a previous shoot. I sit down and wait. One hour goes by. Then two. Publicists and hair and makeup artists scurry around me. Kardashians are everywhere--in posters hanging on the walls, on life-size cardboard cutouts, and in the flesh, appearing and disappearing through dressing-room doors (one in Uggs, another in a terry robe, all on their BlackBerrys). I have entered Kardashian land.
